Christ and Culture Revisited, ch. 2
Offering a short but powerful critique of Niebuhr's work, Carson situates our understanding of the subject in biblical theology. He offers four "non-negotiables" to keep in mind simultaneously and always as we consider Christ and Culture. They are as follows:
Creation and Fall
Israel and the Law
Christ and the New Covenant
Heaven and Hell
I appreciate this helpful framework from which to think about this subject. In an unexpected but helpful point, he explains Jesus' use of "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's". He basically appeals to the intertwined nature of religion and government at the time. But, more significantly picks up on Jesus' two questions 'who's image and who's inscription?' in order to make the point that Caesar is made in God's image and God's law is inscribed on our hearts. I was not fully convinced by this, but his footnotes offer further reading which I hope to do.
