Is God a Moral Monster? ch. 10
Copan again seeks to demonstrate that the laws of Israel were an improvement over ANE laws. ANE was patriarchal as well as demeaning to women. Israel imporved upon these, not the least of which, is the treatment of women as equals. He points out that women could prophecy, judge, teach and even participate in cultic ceremonies. His overarching point is to say that women were primarily excluded from priesthood because of the prostitution found in other religious temples. While I think there is something there, I am concerned that God is limiting his people because of the wrong practices of pagans. Would it not be better to show the proper way of practicing religion? After all, abuse and misuse does not negate proper use.
