Kingdom Triangle, ch. 4

Dr. Moreland suggests five steps or shifts that have moved our souls from the drama of the Kingdom to deadness:

1. Knowledge to Faith - he tells a funny story of what Oprah did NOT say. He also talks about 'the integration of faith and learning' as an assumption of separation. I appreciated the quote from John Hick which said the "considerable decline within society as a whole, accompanied by a lesser decline within churches, of the belief in personal immortality clearly reflects the assumption within our culture that we should only believe in what we experience plus what the accredited sciences certify to us."

2. From Human Flourishing to Satisfaction of Desire - he describes the classical and contemporary understanding of happiness.

3. From Duty and Virtue to Minimalist Ethics - Daniel Callahan argues that "one may morally act in any way one chooses so long as one does not do harm to others" is the one moral axiom people live by in our culture.

4. From Classic Freedom to Contemporary Freedom - basically, from doing what one ought to do to doing what one wants to do.

5. From Classic Tolerance to Contemporary Tolerance - Moreland dismantles the arguments for moral relativism and demonstrates the difference between respecting everyone's view and believing/accepting everyone's view as true.
